Just a few weeks ago, marked the end of the “season” for Entreamigos. It is a time when we close our doors for five weeks in order to serve as the hurricane shelter for the community, but mostly it is a time when we take a deep breath, dedicate some time to ourselves and our family and get ready for the coming year.
The end of the “season” for Entreamigos marks the beginning of the school year for the children of our community. Every year, just a day before we close our doors we invite these children to Entreamigos and we distribute backpacks and school supplies that we have spent the year gathering. Some years we have more supplies than others but every year we have many, many kids that need our support.
On August 15th and 16th of 2016, Entreamigos was able to provide backpacks stuffed full with notebooks, erasers, calculators, pencils, crayons and every sort of school supply to the kids of San Pancho. This year 95 University, High School, Jr. High and Elementary school scholarship students received brand new backpacks and an additional 110 school supply packs and 85 backpacks were handed out to students who didn’t have the grades for the scholarship program but certainly had significant need.
This week, Yazmin, our social outreach coordinator will deliver school supply packs to every school teacher in the San Pancho elementary school as well as teachers in Las Lomas and San Ignacio. We will continue to deliver these school supply packs throughout the year.
We love that we can do this for our community and although we purchase some of these supplies, the overwhelming bulk of these materials is brought in by the World Ventures and Dreamtrips groups that visit, by those that donate through Pack for a Purpose and by individuals who pack what they can in their luggage. We are humbled and grateful to be the recipient of such generosity. Thank you.
